A hypothesis: everyone has in them a certain capacity for adjusting to change; the supply is finite, like a woman’s eggs, and has to last a lifetime.

My daily vexation at ‘what abusion is there nowadays’ makes me fear that I am, so to speak, laying double-yolkers, and thereby running the risk of becoming a premature crotcheteer.
