I think I may have discovered the source of our current “austerity”. Oxford University’s page about the structure of the Philosophy, Politics & Economics course states that, in the second and third years, ‘Students choose to continue with all three branches or concentrate on any two’. The choice which seems to have been made during the education of most of the Cabinet is,
Politics, ‘the acquisition or exercise of power, status, or authority’
+ Economics, ‘the production, distribution, consumption, and transfer of wealth’
− Philosophy, ‘the principles of human behaviour; the study of morality; ethics’
