We’re hearing a lot about the possibility that the broadcasters will ‘empty-chair’ David Cameron if he doesn’t turn up for the leaders’ debates. But as a recent piece of Labour propaganda makes clear, it’s actually Cameron who is employing the empty-chair technique: ‘In Gestalt therapy, a technique in which the client switches between two chairs, acting out both sides of a conversation or argument’ (A Dictionary of Psychology).
