I go to see Far from the Madding Crowd – having never read the book – at the newly opened Picturehouse cinema in East Dulwich.

Now, I knew that Thomas Hardy was an innovative writer, but I didn’t realise he actually invented Snog–Marry–Avoid!

I have only one complaint about the film. Whereas Hardy doesn’t name the younger of Farmer Oak’s two sheepdogs, the film-makers name him after the elder, which makes him ‘Young George’. On reflection, I myself would have gone for ‘Fenton’.
