On diving at the Euros: in order to assess whether a player is being genuine when he goes down, we should compare his reaction to those occasions when two players from the same team accidentally clatter into each other when going for the same ball – defenders in the box for example. This control thought experiment demonstrates that when playing genuinely and to the whistle, and not seeking an unfair advantage, players don’t tend to wail and prostrate themselves like supplicant pilgrims halfway up Mount Zion and baked by the midday sun.
