I’ve just realised why Nicholas Parsons sounds so rambling when signing off at the end of Just A Minute: he does it as if he’s playing the game.

I’m beginning to think that Radio 4 will only let you on the air if it’s possible to sing your name to the theme tune of Mona the Vampire:

  • Nomia Iqbal
  • Razia Iqbal
  • Chi Chi Izundu
  • Sima Kotecha
  • Sanjoy Majumder
  • Tulip Mazumdar
  • Sangita Myska
  • Lizo Mzimba
  • Mona Siddiqui
  • Anne-Marie Tomchak

A discussion between female friends, overheard in a stationary carriage at New Cross Gate:

PASSENGER 1: By my reckoning, only one in twenty episodes of the Today programme is actually listenable.
PASSENGER 2: How d’you work that out?
PASSENGER 1: Well, there’s a twenty per cent chance of Webb presenting, and then a twenty-five per cent chance that he will be paired with Husain. Ergo, there’s a five per cent chance – one in twenty – that Humphrys, Naughtie, and Montague will all be absent on the same day.
PASSENGER 2: I see. …But what about the news?

I’m prompted by a discussion on the Moral Maze with Galen Strawson to formulate a ‘free will or determinism’ version of Pascal’s wager:

‘Free will exists or it does not.’ But to which side shall we incline? Let us weigh the gain and the loss in wagering that free will exists. Let us estimate the two chances. If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing, because you could not have wagered otherwise. Wager then without hesitation that free will exists.
